Nursing Home - Medicaid

A young lady came in this week. She mentioned they had to sell her grandfather’s house in order to pay for his nursing home costs; the family thought they had to do this in order to qualify the grandfather for Medicaid. I am not an expert on Medicaid, but I told her I did know that they did not have to sell grandfather’s house. Medicaid has an asset test and an income test. If there is “an intent to return home” then the home is not considered an asset and grandfather could have kept the home. Key note: on the application, you always say there is an intent to return home, regardless.
